Brandt’s been designing and implementing the fully redundant network topology illustrated here. The multihomed network is connected to a pair of redundant firewalls. The proxy servers control the flow of traffic to a tier of replicated application servers. The mysql database servers are also replicated, and file storage is seperated on a pair of nfs boxes. In addition, we have both hard drive backup and offsite tape storage to protect against data loss.

The ECHO (Education through Cultural and Historical Organizations) Project begins development

We’ve begun development of an educational Web applicaiton for the ECHO project. This is a major, federally funded educational and cultural enrichment initiative. ECHO brings to culturally diverse audiences innovative programs collaboratively produced by six regional cultural entities: Alaska Native Heritage Center and North Slope Borough ECHO Project in Alaska; Bishop Museum in Hawaii; New Bedford ECHO Project and Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts, and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians in Mississippi. Our application will launch in the fall.

The series of outages from the Internet provider into our data center have precipitated an investigation by the State of Vermont. See the Vermont Public Radio article State government demands explanation for Internet outages . In the meantime, we are working very hard to multihome our network since it’s become clear we can no longer rely on Level 3 for our connectivity, and will blog as soon as that’s been accomplished.

pv - Pipe Viewer - is a terminal-based tool for monitoring the progress of data through a pipeline. It can be inserted into any normal pipeline between two processes to give a visual indication of how quickly data is passing through, how long it has taken, how near to completion it is, and an estimate of how long it will be until completion.
Pipe Viewer.
This has been one of my favorite opensource finds of the past couple weeks. It simply rocks for doing large database imports or anything that involves processing large files. Major props to Andrew Wood and all the authors for creating such an awesomely useful little utility.
